Paul and Matilda Wegner visited the Holy Ghost Park in Dickeyville in 1929, not long after they retired. Among the first fruits of that visit: this concrete, crockery and glass model of the Bremen, the ship on which they emigrated to the U.S. from Germany in 1885.

The Wegners followed with an ensemble of creations on their Cataract, Wis., property, including the chapel at right above and left below, on whose outer walls they memorialized other great places of worship, along with the religions that built them

Like other important Wisconsin environments, the Wegner grotto has benefited from the preservation efforts of the Kohler Foundation, which turned the site over to Monroe County in 1987. (Kohler's brochure supplied the information on this page.)

For more information on the grotto, write the Monroe County Local History Room, Route 2, Box 21, Sparta, Wis. 54656 or call 608-269-8680.
