The galleries linked from this page are a direct result of the Intuit Art Museum’s 2026 tour of Spanish art environments, lead by Jo Farb Hernández, the world’s leading expert on these places. Although we saw only a fraction of the environments that dot Spain, it was one amazing place after another.
What the artists have in common is the remarkable vision required to imagine these sites and the remarkable obsession required to build them. Many of them also have in common working-class backgrounds and often-limited education.
Note that much of the information I’ve included is sourced from Hernández’s Singular Spaces books, which richly document these and scores of other Spanish art environments. I highly recommend them. Although the two fat books that make up volume 2 are rather pricey, the first volume is eminently affordable. All of them are well worth acquiring.
